Which way should your panels face?
The best roof for solar in the UK usually faces south at a moderate pitch, but plenty of other roofs still work well. This map shows roughly how much power panels would make on a roof facing any direction at any pitch, where you live. Drag the marker to your own roof and see how it compares with the best angle.
Output by direction and pitch
Each spot on the map is a roof direction and pitch. Darker areas make more power over a year. The figure next to the marker shows its yearly output per kWp and how close it gets to the best angle for your area. Drag the marker or use the arrow keys to move it.
The side panel shows how many kWh a year a system of the size you've chosen would make at that angle. "Compared with best" measures it against the best spot on the map for your area.

How this works
- Sun data comes from PVGIS, the European Commission's free solar tool, for your postcode, with the same 14% system loss as our calculator.
- PVGIS works out output for a set of points: a flat roof, then pitches of 15°, 30°, 35°, 45°, 60° and 90° in five directions. The colours and figures between those points are interpolated, so they're estimates and can differ slightly from the calculator.
- East and west facing roofs are treated as mirror images, so they show the same output.
- Figures are for a typical year. Real years will vary with the weather.
- Nearby postcodes within about 10 km share one set of figures. Shading from trees, chimneys or buildings isn't modelled.
